I hope it’s been dry in the middle of the UK today, because it hasn’t been too rosy at either end. The Met Office issued a weather warning for the Highlands which applied for much of Monday, and I can attest from personal experience that it teemed down on the Sussex coast.
I wouldn’t normally mind. Rain’s far more interesting than interminable grey skies, and every drop we get now reduces the likelihood of a hose pipe ban next summer, but I have a problem just at the moment - my roof leaks.
When the skies open, water rolls off the slates into a couple of gutters that run the length of my flat. In theory, it should merrily babble along them before dropping out of sight into a gutter. In reality, a small amount makes it through the worn weatherproofing and into my loft.
Anyone who’s lived in flats will know that, with several neighbours to coordinate, building repairs don’t always happen quickly. Which means that on days like today, when a coastal gale drives tanker loads of water inland, people with leaky roofs can only sit nervously in the office, hoping that they’ll still have ceilings when they get home.
