Let the games begin

by Simon Handby in Your car on 17.07.08

We’ve been looking forward to it for ages; the blood, the sweat, the tears. The thrills and excitement, the lows, the disappointments and the anticlimax after it’s all over again. Nope, I’m not talking about the Olympics – school’s nearly out for summer.

But kids are a tricky bunch, and six weeks of freedom means six weeks where you’ll have to keep the little blighters occupied. Worst of all, some of those six weeks are going to be spent in the car, where the legs soon grow restless and the cries of ‘are we nearly there yet’ can multiply quicker than the fuel bills.

But if a long journey with the kids sounds like a descent into hell, fear not. We’ve put our heads together and come up with no less than the greatest car games in the world. Print them off, give them to the kids and revel in a welcome diversion from, er, unwelcome diversions.

And, whatever Living’s other writers might tell you, everybody knows that the best car game ever is pub cricket (opens PDF file) – a game for the whole car that kept me sane (honest) on many a family outing. All you need is a car journey, a route that takes you past some pubs, and our handy sheet of rules.

Wherever you’re heading this summer, drive safely and have a great holiday.
