Roadside Orchid no. 2

by Charlie Peverett in Your car on 17.06.08

Bright pink pyramidal orchids are relatively easy to spot from the car window, but you really have to get on foot to see this one.

Bee Orchid

This bee orchid was growing close to the road, on an otherwise unremarkable-looking piece of verge.

Only when you get close does the bee-shaped petal make itself clear. Despite looking rather delicate, they’re apparently not fussy about where they grow - worth keeping eyes peeled while stretching your legs in any layby.
