Pic of the Day: Roadside Orchid

Pyramidal Orchid, just starting to flower

Britain may only have around 50 of the world’s 25,000 or so species of orchid - but the fact that some can be found on our roadside verges makes them, to my mind, just as intriguing as the more exotic specimens.

Pyramidal Orchids are just starting to flower, and it’s at this stage that they most closely resemble their name. This one was taken beside the busy A27 in Sussex - but they can be found across southern England, the Midlands, and in patches into the West and North of England.

For an excellent online guide to all species, see the Britain’s Orchids website by David Lang.
