How many trees is Earth Day worth?

Today is the 39th Earth Day. It’s now pretty big business, especially in the US, where a lot of companies are keen to strut their green stuff.

For instance, how many trees would you have to plant before you told the world you were doing something for the environment?

Vehicle manufacturer Subaru has pledged to plant up to 160 cherry trees across the US - “what will amount to a small forest” - to help celebrate its 40th anniversary, just in time for Earth Day.

To be clear, we’re not getting lost in translation - ‘forest’ means about the same in the US as it does in the UK. It’s thick woodland spread over a large area.

Josh Loposer at Green Daily:

Is Subaru cool for planting trees? Or extremely lame for offering up such a band-aid solution? I’m pretty sure that if this was GM or Ford, critics would be ripping them a new one for their paltry efforts.

And while undoubedly every bit helps, Treehugger suggests that a new push to plant a billion trees may be more deserving of our Earth Day-attention.

We wood be inclined to agree.
