Real nappy love

When it comes to nappies, any new parent will testify that it’s a case of the quicker, cleaner and easier the better - three words not conventionally associated with the washable variety.

Child in nappyHowever, Real Nappy Week launches today and the Real Nappy Campaign is hoping to dispel the bad press and have the issue, ahem, all wrapped up.

For a start, there are the pins. Today’s washable nappies have dispensed with the sharp stuff, and now tend to fasten with poppers, Velcro and plastic grips.

Then there’s the money. By the time your pride and joy is potty-trained, you could have spent over £700 on disposable baby booty-wraps, which will inevitably end their days as landfill fodder.

Using real nappies for the same job, however, could cost you as little as £185 including washing bills, says the Real Nappy Campaign – saving you up to £500 per child.

Now some local authorities offer incentives to parents looking to go down the re-usable nappy route and Real Nappy Week is keen to supply more reasons to join the ‘real’ world.

The campaigners hope that retailers offering money-off promotions and displays highlighting support available, plus fashion shows, picnics and storytelling events, should make a big splash.

Details of events in your area, as well as a rash of useful happy nappy information, can be found on the Real Nappy Campaign website.
