Get paid to recycle
by Charlie Peverett in At home on 17.04.08
When we wrote yesterday about looking West for recycling inspiration, we weren’t anticipating crossing the Atlantic - only the Irish Sea.
But an intriguing idea has been brewing across the pond, and it’s headed our way.
RecycleBank is a scheme that’s had some success in several regions of America, where it offers householders reward points (RecycleBank Dollars) according to the amount of recycling they do.
How? Well, the contents of your wheelie bin are weighed as they’re deposited in the recycling truck. Then credits are awarded to your account (as read through a barcode on the side of your bin).
You can make a maximum of $35 a month, which can be redeemed at participating local and national businesses. Think Nectar points for waste.
Redeeming the UK?
According to Green Tech Blog, RecycleBank has now secured investment of $30 million (real ones we assume, rather than RecycleBank Dollars) to expand its operations in the US and to set up in Europe.
As yet, we haven’t heard back from them as to whether this includes the UK, but we’ll keep you posted.
