Want to be a natural beauty?

‘Green’ is making its mark on the cosmetics industry this year, and you don’t have to come off resembling the Wicked Witch of the West to get in on the act.
The number of ethical cosmetics and skin care launches in Europe increased five-fold in 2007 to 2,260, according to a recent report by Mintel. More than 420 new ethical products have also hit European beauty counters this year, suggesting that ‘green’ is the colour to be seen in as we approach the summer season.
Looking to take the natural beauty sector forwards, leaders of the cosmetics industry will gather at the second Natural Beauty Summit in New York in May. On the agenda is the adoption of voluntary standards to make it easier for the average consumer to differentiate between genuinely natural and organic cosmetics and pseudo-green products.
If you’re looking for some advice on how to tell the ‘goodies’ from the ‘baddies’, crueltyfree.org has a useful guide on where to find cosmetics that haven’t been tested on animals.
Those already clued-up and with a make-up bag full of ethical slap can now vote for their favourite animal-friendly cosmetics in a new category at the Vegetarian Society’s annual awards. Nominations for the ‘Best Vegetarian Beauty Product’ will be taken until 30 June.
