BMW fast becoming green swot

Fresh from showing the Prius an even cleaner pair of heels, BMW has put another green feather in its cap.

Overall, Clean Green Cars’ CO2 industry analysis shows that BMW-owned Mini has become the UK’s lowest CO2 car make, emitting a cross-model average of 138.87 grams of the gas per kilometre (g/km). BMW itself is among the most improved since Q1 2007, having reduced its cross-model emissions by almost 11%, to 163.38 g/km.

American manufacturer Jeep improved the most, though, knocking an impressive 21% from its model range’s CO2 emissions. But, at 217.51 g/km, its average is still on the high side. Meanwhile, a distinctly off-message Chevrolet managed to increase its CO2 average by 7.5%, to 172.35 g/km.

Clean Green Cars’ publisher Jay Nagley said that the site’s figures showed the difference between manufacturers who talk, and those who act. “While all manufacturers talk about environmental improvements, there are plenty who have improved by less than 1% in the last 12 months,” he said.

And what of Toyota, makers of the out-smugged Prius hybrid? We suspect they’ll be quite happy as the manufacturer with Britain’s fifth-lowest emissions: a 146.41 g/km average.
