Google goes Blackle?

Last year we wrote about Blackle, a black-background front page for the search engine Google that aims to save energy. Now technology news site TechCrunch reports that Google Israel has gone black for Earth Hour.

Google goes BlackleOur experiments with a plug-in power meter confirmed that, for a modern flat-screen LCD at least, what’s on the screen doesn’t have a significant effect on amount of power that gets used.

In fact, as TechCrunch points out, Google has previously suggested that “displaying black may actually increase energy usage”.

That’s certainly not what we’d expect, but if it’s true for some monitors, Google Israel might be increasing energy usage by going black for Earth Hour.

And we thought its motto was “don’t be evil“.
