New cars: safe for occupants, not for pedestrians?

by Simon Handby in Your car on 19.12.07

Crash test dummyEuro NCAP, the independent car safety organisation, released the results of tests on six new cars today.

The organisation’s tests, which involve a 40 mph frontal collision and two side impacts, seem pretty brutal, but four of the six cars tested scored the full five stars for adult occupant safety, and four received four stars for child occupant safety.

The results are impressive, but the news isn’t quite so good for pedestrians.

Euro NCAP has been testing pedestrian safety for many years, but five of the six cars score only two out of a maximum four stars. Euro NCAP called the pedestrian scores ‘disappointing’.

Car Magazine has pictures of each car after the frontal impact test.
