G-Wiz gets a fresh charge

The poor G-Wiz electric car hasn’t always had the best of press. Even while singing its praises, Boris Johnson once called it “a Fisher-Price toy of a car, a glorified Airfix model”, and we last referred to them as looking like a Smart car undergoing an awkward adolescence.
Then there are the safety worries. The government first raised concerns about the G-Wiz’s safety after conducting a 35mph crash test in April this year, but it was Top Gear that really put the boot in after an example spectacularly failed a 40mph Euro NCAP test.
To be fair, the G-Wiz is classed as a quadricycle, never designed to pass car industry tests, and fortunately its buyers haven’t been overly deterred. According to importers GoinGreen, more than 900 Gs are currently Whizzing around the streets of London.
Even so, indian manufacturer Reva hasn’t been hanging around, and a revised G-Wiz i model, available from February, has been announced.
GoinGreen reports that the vehicle’s beefed up safety features, which include 30% more powerful brakes and increased front and side impact protection, have helped it successfully crash test at 25mph.
At the last count, that’s more than twice the average speed of London traffic.
