Worried about money? Save your energy

Even if cutting the carbon emissions from your home doesn’t grab you, it’s likely that saving £475 each year will.

It turns out that’s how much you could save by cutting your home’s energy use by 80% - the amount that a new report says is possible by 2050.

The Home Truths report, released by the Environmental Change Institute, sets out a blueprint for delivering huge carbon cuts from UK homes. Commissioned by environmental charity Friends of the Earth, it says that by 2020, current government policies will only have delivered half the cuts in household carbon emissions that they should.

The report goes on to show how initial spending of £12.9 billion a year for around ten years could deliver 80% cuts in carbon emissions.

Aside from the obvious environmental benefits that would bring, the report outlines how this would translate to average household energy bills, with cuts of at least 66%. That’s a £475 annual saving at today’s prices – enough to keep you in energy-saving light bulbs for the foreseeable future.

Report author Dr Brenda Boardman said that it “sets out a win-win scenario”, and that its recommendations would lead to huge cuts in carbon emissions, wipe out fuel poverty and ensure that everyone has a warm, comfortable, low-carbon home.

Well, we always said that saving the planet could give you a rosy glow.
