Ready salted

On Monday we were wondering whether the apparent high salt content of fast food was any worse than you’d find at a ‘proper’ restaurant. So we decided to ask a few upmarket chains.

As we said, Cafe Rouge does publish the nutritional value of its menu items, with salt varying from a trace to several grammes per dish. We asked Pizza Express, Yo! Sushi, Wagamama and La Tasca whether they also did.

Yo! Sushi explained that they would be making nutritional information for their menu available later this year, while La Tasca told us that nutritional values weren’t available “at this time”.

Despite sending Pizza Express and Wagamama a couple of emails each, we’ve yet to have a response.

There’s a lot of evidence to suggest that high daily salt consumption can raise blood pressure and contribute to circulatory diseases, so it’s a good idea to go easy with salty foods. That said, the occasional salty treat should be OK as part of a balanced diet.

And, if you are eating out, it’s worth remembering that not all fast food is full of salt, and that you can find salty food in posh restaurants, too.
