Pooled resources

Apples - the core of the matterIt’s not all bad news for alcohol when it comes to saving the planet. One Somerset town has got together with a local brewer to come up with a novel way of heating its open air swimming pool.

As part of an energy saving effort by Mendip District Council, Shepton Mallet Lido is using waste heat generated by the neighbouring Brothers cider factory.

Apparently, the system has raised water temperature in the pool from 14 to 27 degrees centigrade, and the council says that the Lido will get more than 40% of its heat from the plant in the future.
