Fun with the government

We thought the government’s carbon calculator was fun, but it’s outdone itself with its latest animated toy.

In theory it’s aimed at children, but my abodo has caught the attention of many green bloggers. The site - the result of a collaboration between DEFRA and several educational bodies - lets you decorate a virtual house, and see the effect of certain lifestyle choices on the environment.

For example: grown your own vegetables and recycle where possible and your abodo is surrounded by green and pleasant lands. Stick a 4×4 on the driveway and leave your TV switched on and the neighbourhood dump will, literally, runneth over.

It’s fun to play with the various options and watch the cute animations react to your choices, but the site is educational and contains some useful advice and guides on green topics such as low-energy lighting.

That it’s aimed at kids can only be good news for the environment, after DEFRA’s recent survey showed a surprising indifference to climate change among 11 to 17-year-olds.
